The term 'gospel song' refers to the musical forms of the North American Negro, which developed from the Negro spirituals of the 19th century. In contrast to the spiritual, the gospel song originally arose from within the context of the service, during the interpretation of the Gospel, when the preacher would spontaneously shout to the congregation, who then in turn would break into song. This was accompanied by short, formulaically pregnant melodies, performed and elaborated with many voices-repeated ever anew, and this way leading possibly to ecstatic singing and even 'holy dancing'. The modern gospel songs, mostly composed melodies in simple song form, are sung by the congregation as well as the soloist, and, in contrast to the spirituals, are constantly accompanied by smaller instrumental ensembles. Gospel music, together with jazz, has secured a worldwide following since the 1930's.
However in North American black congregations the modern gospel song is still to be heard as a fervent or ecstatic musical genre during church services.
The term 'Spiritual' represents a particular kind of religious group song, which is practically native to America, and is defined as a combination of deeply emotional, New Testament text (which makes liberal use of lines, stanzas and refrains) and a melody, whose origin is either directly from sung or instrumental folk music, or is written in a traditional style. The Spiritual is a part of the religious music of Afro-Americans in the USA.
The name derives from the usage of the term 'Spiritual Song' common among Anglo-Saxon settlers in the ]8th century, namely, and church song, hymn, choral arrangement, etc.
It is the result of a cultural mixing progress: a symbiosis of Anglo-Saxon Protestant- based church songs, African music, and religious elements of Africa, brought together under the conditions of American slavery.
On the one hand, these primary elements led to the blacks' assimilation of white formal patterns; on the other hand, they also led to new, creative Afro-American alternatives.
Whites first made attempts to record and publish spirituals in the time of the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation (1 861). They freely and loosely reinterpreted the music in a Europeanized form.
At the same time spirituals were being compositionally arranged by choirs at the newly founded Universities of Black people, as well as by smaller ensembles, and performed in concerts in Europeanized, multi-voiced movements. The gospel music genre became known worldwide through this defamiliarized version; however the original musical tradition still lives to this day.
